I am happy to offer this rare automatic VW Sportsmobile for sale. This bus has only 94,3xx original miles and it still has lots of original goodies including the owner's manual, rare stripped side tent (!), screen for the rear hatch, jack with canvas bag, and more!
The Sportsmobile VW Camper Van has a pop top that pops straight up providing more room in the "loft" area than the Westfalia. The canvas for the pop top is like new. As a matter of fact the entire interior is nearly like new. It's obvious this bus has been well cared for over the years.
I have only seen one other VW Bus with an automatic transmission in all of my years of VW-ing. The other automatic bus I saw was a passenger bus that was equipped with a wheel chair ramp on the side. I have never seen another VW Camper Bus with an automatic transmission. It's quite a novelty and it is just one of the many aspects of this VW Bus that is unique and interesting.
This VW Sportsmobile runs, drives and stops well. It recently had the oil changed and the valves adjusted so the maintenance is all taken care of for the next happy owner.
This VW Camper spent its entire life in Ohio. I purchased the bus last fall after and brought it up to Minnesota to get it fixed up for the next owner. I stored the bus all winter to keep it away from the snow and salt. The original owner's manual shows that 13 of the first 14 dealer maintenance services were performed at the dealership (they are date stamped by the VW Dealership in Cleveland, Ohio and Warrenville Hts, Ohio). Even the 81,000 and 84,000 miles maintenance were performed and noted in the original owner's manual.
Some of the fun and rare extras that come with this '73 Sportsmobile VW Camper are a portable toilet (which is in brand new condition), a wastebasket that fits under the closet, a sink, a refrigerator, and a fold down rear bed large enough for two adults. There is also room for two more adults in the bed in the pop top area.
The body is in pretty good shape for its age but it is not perfect. There are a few areas where rust is starting, but the floors and frame are in great shape. You can see every inch of this rare automatic Sportsmobile van in the close up photo gallery. The links to both the close up gallery and the full body gallery are just below this written description.
The radio works and the bus starts right up the second you hit the key. Sportsmobile Campers are very unique and I find the craftsmanship well thought out and interesting. What looks like the original flooring is under the carpet in the main living area and it looks almost brand new! This bus sure is a unique one, and if you are prefer an automatic you probably won't find a nicer one for sale anywhere else.
Thank you for checking out this classic VW Pop Top Camper Bus! Feel free to call or email with any questions. -John Snell - SOLD
