Rare Early Model VW Thing!
We finally have another VW Thing for sale! As many of you may know, VW only imported the VW Thing into the United States in 1973 and 1974. A limited number of VW Things were produced in earlier years however, and this is your chance to own the rarest of the rare in the VW Thing World.
This 1971 VW Thing is different from the more common (though still rare) 1973-1974 models in several ways. The most notable difference in this model is the rear tail lights are positioned just above the rear bumper. This is the factory position for such an early model thing. (The tail lights however should be the same style as found an a 1968-1970 bus.) Other differences found on this early example are the speedometer is in Km/hr, the wiper switch is on the dash verses the steering column, and the front hood release lever is located just below the glove box verses inside the glove box. If you want a VW Thing that stands out even at a VW Thing gathering, this one fits the bill.
As you can probably tell, somebody put a lot of work into making this VW Thing comfortable and nice looking. It has undergone what I may refer to as an amateur restoration, or a "daily driver" restoration. This is the kind of car that would be great for piling the entire family into the car and cruising around town or to the beach. It looks nice and the seats are certainly practical and very comfortable (especially when compared to original VW Thing seats!!). Someone even went through the trouble of updating the seat belts to include a shoulder strap (this is a nice safety feature not originally included on ANY VW Thing). But it's not a show car. The floors were fixed with patches rather than replacing the entire sections as you would expect from a show car. And the color is not a factory color. But again, if you are just looking for a SUPER FUN cruiser this VW Thing will certainly fit the bill.

I have only seen one other pre-'73 Thing in my entire life of going to VW Shows. I was talking with some of the guys from the local VW Club and all of them had only seen one other one too. After a laugh we realized it was the same one that we all saw at a show about 10 years ago. Anyway, this is a super rare opportunity, and the car should hold it's value even better than the '73-'74 models. If you buy this VW Thing you will certainly be followed by waves and smiles wherever you go.
