I am happy to offer this 1966 VW Bus for sale. This bus is now back from a Nation-Wide Mello Yello promotion and is being restored to be put up for sale. In January of 2010 I flew to Los Angeles and then drove down to San Diego to check out this classic Hippy Bus. Fitting the iconic image, the owner was a surfer and he used this classic Volkswagen as his beach bus. During his ownership the surfer refinished the interior in beautiful (and period correct) walnut wood panels. There is an electrical outlet on the driver’s side panel for RV hookup and that feature combined with the wood interior leads me to believe this bus was likely a camper model at some point in its life.
After purchasing this surfer bus in San Diego I had it shipped to Further Performance in Minneapolis, Minnesota (that’s where I live). I had the engine replaced with a rebuilt 1635cc engine for some extra “get up and go”! I also had the transmission rebuilt as fourth gear would pop out so this VW Bus now has a rebuilt motor and transmission!
This is a walk through model VW Bus which means the bus has two front bucket seats. With this configuration the driver can “walk through” the entire bus from front to rear without having to go outside. This works well if you need to get from the driver’s door all the way back to the back seat in a hurry of if you simply want to do so with minimal effort. The other Mello Yello VW Van (yes, Sunset Classics was commissioned to provide TWO of these classic VW Buses) is also from 1966 and it has a front bench seat (1/3 2/3 front seat as it is known). That bus is restored and is also for sale on this Sunset Classics Web Site (see “Classic Cars for Sale” at the top of this page).
Some of the photos in the galleries below show this bus as green and white. That is how the bus looked when purchased. Mello Yello has paid for a beautiful and vintage vehicle wrap so the bus is now yellow and white. The vehicle wrap is a professional adhesive graphic done by the same Minnesota company that provided all of the outdoor graphics at the new Twins Stadium here in Minneapolis! The bus really looks great and most people even in person guess it's a paint job!
