This is a beautiful 1966 VW Bus for sale and is one of two VW Buses rented from Sunset Classics for a Nation Wide promotion for the soft drink Mellow Yellow. I took a trip to San Diego, California to find and purchase this walk-through version of the classic VW Microbus. I found another bench seat model locally that a fellow VW Club member had been restoring. I spent months getting the two buses ready, and the promotion ran for three years starting in 2010. These VW Buses brought smiles and joy to tens of thousands of people in all parts of the Country. Now that the promotion has ended and this bus has been fixed up, you now have a chance to own this 1966 VW Bus!
I wanted to get this bus all ready for a new owner that wouldn't necessarily know as much about these classic vans as I do. The first thing I addressed was to get some rust repair done so the new owner would have a good, solid bus that would last for many years to come. I sent this '66 to Jeff Gagnon in Sioux Falls, SD for the body work and paint. $11,000+ of metal work, body work and paint was needed to bring this VW Bus up to the condition you see presented here. All new door seals, window rubber, and gaskets were used in reassembling the Bus after paint. This Van looks beautiful now in all white, and it provides a nice, straight "blank canvas" for anyone with their own vision of how they would like this VW Bus to look. A vehicle wrap could be put back on the bus with any number of personalized designes. The lower half of the bus could be painted to a color of the new owner's choosing, or this VW Van could be enjoyed exactly as it is. I think it looks beautiful, humble and pure exactly how it sits.
After the new paint, I sent the VW Bus to two more shops to get it running and driving perfectly. The engine and transmission had already been completely rebuilt prior to the promotion, and since the Vans were trailered the entire time they were rented, fewer than 200 miles are on the rebuilt running gear! The bus now has all new brakes, a new wiring harness, as well as the new tires and engine and transmission that were done when I first got the bus.
For the 2012 portion of the promotion I was commissioned to install front opening safari windows and shag carpeting to both buses. I recovered the seats in yellow, and now the interior is full of pazazz! I have some extra shag carpeting should someone decide to touch up the interior in this retro fashion. And the interiors on these buses are simple enough that a person could change the interior to any number of styles without much effort. I personally LOVE the interior and I would love to drive this to a car show, drive-in movie or camp ground and I would be delighted to hang out for hours in this joyous styling.
