We have this nice Southern California 1961 split-window VW Bus for sale with a nice, solid body. The bus has a rebuilt engine and it runs and drives great!
Some of the highlights on this bus are the fact that it's so straight! If you've ever tried to massage the side panels of a bus into looking as straight as when they came from the factory you'll appreciate the side panels on this one. I've bought and sold a lot of busses and other classic VW's and this bus has about the least amount of rust of any un-restored bus I've seen (The Southern California Desert is the place to get old cars!). There has been a patch repair on the passenger side front floor but the driver's side front and cargo floors look nice, solid and original. There is some rust below the cargo doors but the inner rockers, doglegs (below the front doors), and all the frame rails and outriggers are in great shape.
Another great feature on this bus is the rebuilt motor. The engine (1600cc) was line board, it has fresh bearings, and brand new pistons and cylinders were installed. The builder of the motor has done several VW motors in the past (including some for racing) so this was not his first rebuild. The engine is super dry and does not leak any oil. It does idle a bit rough until it warms up. A simple warm air pickup hose should help. It has a larger than stock carburetor that gives this bus a lot of power. The bus has a nice lowered front beam and it runs, drives and shifts great.
I am the founder of Vintage VW Cars LLC and I've searched hundreds of hours looking for old VW's to restore and this bus is a perfect candidate for either a full restoration or to buy as a nice daily driver. As with most 47 year old vehicles there are a few areas that will need attention. The tail lights and turn signals are currently inoperable. The wipers do work fine. The horn does not work (I own 8 classic VW's and the horn only works in one of 'em). There is an access area above the motor so you can easily get to all areas of the "power plant". The steering wheel could use some attention also--it's functional but not very beautiful.
But the front seat has been reupholstered nicely, there is a matching middle seat, and the rear bed seems to have been custom made out of a Westfalia Z bed! So you can fold down the rear seat and there is an area for sleeping or for carrying cargo (or doggies). Also note that the roof rack is included in the sale!
The nose on this bus is great (even under the nose under the bus in front of the front beam is super solid). The side panels on this bus are super straight. Compared with most other "drivers" out there for sale this bus is nearly rust-free. The engine starts right up and runs great. If you have any questions after viewing the photos please don't hesitate to ask.
