This is a one of a kind, extremely original 1955 Volkswagen Beetle Oval Window Sunroof. I have been involved in classic Volkswagens since I was a little kid inspired by my Uncle three 1952 Split Window Beetles. I was shown the magic and fun of Semaphores at a very early age. As much as I love split window beetles, I love a sliding ragtop even more so this is about as good as it gets in the VW collecting World. Not only is this a very rare model, this example has all the original sheet metal and fenders all restored to better than new condition making it an investment grade car that would be a pleasure for any collector to own and love.
The 1955 model is unique in many ways. This is the last year of the three fold sliding ragtop sunroof; the view through the huge sunroof is really awe-inspiring! This is also the last year of the "bat wing" steering wheel and round heater floor vents. This car also has the correct 1955 only tail lights, early ribbed door handles and window cranks, 120mm flat fuel tank, hard to find early engine sheet metal (all chemically stripped and powder coated), large logo Sekurit glass, the list goes on and on. If you know your early VWs there is no end to the exciting and rare features on this car.
As well as being a truly period correct car, there are some rare options included in this restoration. The dash features a very rare Perohaus clock in the speaker (I have only seen a few of these restored in my entire VW life. I have an unrestored clock and grill for my own '57 Sunroof Beetle that I was able to buy from my enthusiast Uncle I mentioned earlier). There are German running boards with the correct wide trim and the car has a beautiful set of show quality sill plates just inside each door. The bud vase on the dash is another period correct accessory. Of course the most exciting option is the huge sliding canvas sunroof.
This is an original black over red car, and the engine and transmission are correctly dated to be original to the car. The body also sits on its matching floor pan. I checked the date stamp on the spare tire and to my surprise it is also correctly date coded to 1955!! The more I checked out this rare, early oval window sunroof the more impressed I was with the car. The engine and split case transmission have both been rebuilt and detailed. And as you can see by the nubs on the tires, the car has had very few miles since the restoration was completed in 2013 and the oval window has been stored in a climate controlled garage since.
